Where is my medical information?
Have you ever thought about this question? Did you know that without endless phone calls, faxes and printing, your medical information has no centralized place to sit?
If it is not physically in your hands, chances are your information is scattered across the health care system in different clinics. Think about it, when was the last time you were vaccinated? Are you allergic to penicillin? Do you know this information about the people you care for?
When I explain the problem we (Trioova) are stubbornly working to solve, I get one of two looks:
The first is shock and disbelief.
You want to assume that when you go to the doctor and they type all of those very important details you tell them into their computer that your other clinicians can see the same information, right? Well, unfortunately, that isn't the case. The fact is, your information is scattered across multiple clinics. This results in you repeating tests and repeating yourself every time you go to a new health professional. This is expensive and time-consuming.
The second is exhaustion and defeat.
This is the look I get from caregivers or people with chronic diseases that have struggled over and over and over to manage their medical files and coordinate sharing it with the people that need it. Be it for a new referral, or for a second opinion, or simply when you need to share the information with your family, transferring information has never been simple or easy. These people are fed up with the exhaustive amount of work that goes into simple information movement in the system. Repeating yourself once doesn't sound that bad, but it's never just once. When it is the tenth time, or twentieth time, or the hundredth time... it's bad.
Imagine a world in which this was all EASY. Oh, doesn't that sound nice? Trust me, I am just as excited as you for this to be possible.
